What is Gas Nitriding?
Gas nitriding is a thermochemical surface hardening process where nitrogen is introduced into the surface of a solid ferrous alloy. This is achieved by holding the metal at a sub-critical temperature (usually between 490°C and 580°C) while in contact with nitrogenous gas (usually Ammonia, NH_3).
